Short answer
A "replica Rolex Submarines 40" is a counterfeit Submariner built around a 40mm case. That size matches the Submariner Rolex sold for decades before the current model moved to 41mm. If you are shopping for one, the case shape, bezel feel, and dial printing matter more than the label on the movement.
Why the 40mm case matters
The 40mm Submariner has a narrower lug profile and a slightly different wrist presence than the 41mm version. Replicas often get this wrong. Some stretch a 41mm copy and call it a 40. When I look at a 40mm Sub replica, I start with the case profile because that is the part you notice on the wrist before anything else.
Case and lugs
Check the lug shape from above and from the side. The lugs should taper cleanly and sit flush against the end links. Look at the crown guards too. On cheap copies they look rounded or bulky. A good 40mm case has sharp but not harsh edges, and the drilled or non-drilled lug holes should match the reference you are copying.
Bezel and insert
The bezel action tells you a lot about build quality. It should click firmly, line up with the dial markers, and have very little back play. Ceramic inserts should have crisp engravings and a finish that does not look painted. I also check the pearl at 12 o'clock. It should sit in the triangle, not float above it.
Dial and hands
Dial printing is where many replicas give themselves away. Look at the spacing between the text lines, the thickness of the coronet, and the shape of the hour markers. The hands should have clean edges and a smooth sweep. Under a loupe, cheap lume plots look uneven. On a better copy, the plots sit flat and the color matches the hands.
Movement and water resistance
Most 40mm Submariner replicas from China use a Chinese automatic movement or a clone of a Swiss design. Ask about the beat rate, hacking, and winding feel. A smooth crown with no grinding is a good sign. Water resistance is a separate issue. A replica may look sealed, but I would not trust it for swimming unless it has been pressure tested. The original Submariner is rated to 300 meters. A replica is not, no matter what the listing says.
Buying from China: what I check
- Real photos of the exact watch, not catalog renders
- Case width measured with calipers, not just listed as 40mm
- Bezel alignment photos at 12, 3, 6, and 9
- Timegrapher numbers if the seller has them
- A clear return policy and payment method with buyer protection
Sellers who answer specific questions about lug width, end link fit, and movement type are usually easier to deal with than sellers who only send stock photos.
Legal reality check
A replica is not a homage. In the US, importing counterfeit goods is illegal, and customs can seize the watch. Rolex actively enforces its trademarks. That does not mean every package gets stopped, but it is a real risk. If you want the look without the legal exposure, a sterile homage watch is the safer route.
Quick checklist before you pay
- Confirm the case is actually 40mm wide, not 41mm.
- Ask for a side profile photo of the lugs and crown guards.
- Check bezel insert alignment and pearl placement.
- Ask which movement is inside and whether it hacks.
- Do not assume water resistance. Pressure test it or keep it dry.
