What the term covers

A "replica Rolex Sub with date" is a counterfeit Rolex Submariner Date. The genuine watch comes in several references. Steel versions are 126610LN with a black bezel and 126610LV with a green bezel. Yellow gold is 126618LN. Two-tone is 126613LN. Rolex listed the steel Submariner Date at $10,250 in the US in 2024. Counterfeit versions sell for $80 to $700 depending on the workshop and the movement inside.

The "with date" part matters. The Submariner No Date, reference 124060, has no date window and no cyclops lens. The Submariner Date has both. Some counterfeit sellers use one case and dial for both models, which shows up as a mismatched crystal and date window.

Legal status in the United States

Importing a counterfeit watch into the US is illegal. 19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy shipments. 18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. A second offense carries up to 20 years. Selling a fake as genuine adds wire fraud and mail fraud charges in most federal districts.

CBP seized 19,724 shipments of counterfeit goods in fiscal year 2023, according to its annual intellectual property report. Watches and jewelry held the largest share by manufacturer's suggested retail price. A single shipment can hold dozens of watches.

How a Submariner Date differs from a fake

  • Cyclops magnification. Genuine is 2.5x. Most fakes sit between 1.5x and 2x.
  • Movement. Genuine caliber 3235 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 70-hour power reserve. Common fakes use a modified ETA clone or a Seagull movement with 40 hours or less.
  • Case back. The Submariner Date has a solid case back. No display back exists for this reference.
  • Rehaut. The word ROLEX repeats around the inner ring, starting at 12 o'clock.
  • Laser crown. Etched in the crystal at 6 o'clock. Visible under 10x magnification.
  • Weight. A steel Submariner Date on a full bracelet is about 155 grams. Fakes come in lighter or heavier depending on the case source.
  • Water resistance. Genuine is rated to 300 meters. Most fakes fail a pressure test above 30 meters.
  • Serial and reference. Stamped between the lugs at 12 and 6 o'clock. Fakes often repeat the same serial across batches.

Workshop names

Chinese counterfeit operations use short names in forums and chat groups. Noob, Clean, VSF, ZF, and ARF appear in listings. Noob stopped shipping after enforcement actions in 2020. A name does not prove quality or origin. Different workshops reuse the same name, and the same name covers several grades.

Points of failure

No counterfeit watch carries a Rolex warranty. Rolex service centers will not accept one for repair. Independent watchmakers can service a clone movement, but part supply is inconsistent. Water damage is common because gasket fit and case tolerances differ from the original. Resale value is near zero except to a buyer who knows the watch is fake.

Resale and fraud exposure

Passing a counterfeit Submariner Date to a dealer or a private buyer as genuine is a crime in every US state. Pawn shops and dealers check serials, movement finish, and service records. A seized watch is destroyed, and the buyer has no recourse against the seller.
