A replica Rolex Explorer II 16570 is a copy of a 40 mm steel GMT watch Rolex built from 1989 to 2011. Replica versions sell for about $120 to $550. The movement sets the price. None of them uses a Rolex-made caliber, and none holds the rated 100 m of water resistance.

How the copies differ
Three build levels show up in the market. Each one changes what the watch does, not just how it looks.
Entry level, $120 to $180. Asian 2813 movement. The 24-hour hand is fixed to the hour wheel or glued in place, so it cannot be set to a second time zone. Bezel numerals are stamped, not engraved. Crystal is mineral glass. End links are hollow.
Mid level, $220 to $340. Modified ETA 2836 or 2892 with a GMT module. The 24-hour hand moves in one-hour jumps from the crown. Sapphire crystal, solid end links, dial print and date font closer to the original.
Top level, $380 to $550. Clone of the 3185 or 3186. Same hand stack, same crown positions, same 28,800 vph beat. Case steel is 316L in most builds. Some sellers claim 904L. Ask for a weight and a magnet test before payment.
Checks before buying
- Pull the crown to the second position. The 24-hour hand should jump one hour per click while the seconds hand keeps running.
- Turn the bezel. It is fixed on the 16570. A rotating bezel means a 16710 case, not a 16570.
- Look at the caseback. Plain steel, no display window. Any 16570 with a glass back is wrong.
- Check the rehaut. The 16570 has a plain inner ring. Engraved "ROLEX ROLEX" repeats belong to later references.
- Measure the case. 40 mm across, not 42 mm. Some listings ship the 216570 case by mistake.
- Inspect the date. The cyclops should magnify about 2.5x. Fuzzy edges and off-center dates are common faults.
Legal position in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import. 19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets Customs seize and destroy shipments that carry a counterfeit trademark. 18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking. A buyer risks seizure, no refund, and a civil claim from the brand owner. Some sellers reship after a seizure, which hides the loss rate from the buyer.
What no copy matches
Movement finishing, the Parachrom hairspring in the 3186, lume brightness after ten years, bracelet stretch, and parts support. Rolex will not service a replica. Independent watchmakers take clone 3185 work in some shops, but the parts supply stays with the seller.
