Short answer

The Datejust 16200 is a 36mm stainless steel Rolex with a smooth domed bezel, sapphire crystal, and the Calibre 3135 inside. Replica versions of this reference run from about $60 junk to roughly $400 builds, and the difference between those two ends has almost nothing to do with the logo on the dial. It comes down to case thickness, date magnification, and the font on the date wheel. Get those three right and most people stop looking.

What the reference actually is

Rolex built the 16200 from the late 1980s into the early 2000s. It sits in a family of five-digit Datejusts that look nearly identical from arm's length and differ mainly at the bezel: the 16234 has a fluted white gold bezel, the 16220 has an engine-turned one, and the 16200 has plain steel. Case is 36mm across, about 11.5mm thick, with 20mm lugs, 100m water resistance, and a screw-down Twinlock crown. The 3135 movement gave it a quickset date, which is why this generation is so much more wearable day to day than the four-digit ones before it.

Why this reference is a frequent replica target

No gold anywhere, so there is nothing to plate and nothing to wear through. The smooth bezel is a single turned piece of steel, which is far easier to copy than a fluted profile with 60-odd facets. And 36mm is the size that fits nearly everyone, so the same case serves a wide market. That combination makes the 16200 one of the easier references to reproduce convincingly, which is also why the market is crowded with lazy attempts.

Movements you will run into

This is the first thing to ask about, because it drives the case dimensions.

  • DG2813 or similar Chinese automatic. Cheap, thin, and rough. Date flips are sloppy and the rotor is loud. Usually found in the $60 to $120 tier.
  • ETA 2836-2 or a clone. Reliable and serviceable, but the movement is thicker than a 3135, so the case often ends up 0.5mm to 1mm too tall.
  • SH3135 or SA3135 clones. Copies of the real architecture. Correct crown height, correct date change direction, correct thickness. This is what you want if the case profile matters to you.

A replica with a 2836 can still look good on a wrist. A replica with a 3135 clone looks good on a caliper, and that is a different standard.

Dial, hands, and the date window

Print quality is where mid-tier replicas separate. Look at the thickness of the coronet, the spacing of the text, and whether "Swiss Made" sits correctly at the bottom. On genuine tritium-era dials the lume plots go cream or pumpkin over time. Reps that fake aged lume usually overshoot and land on mustard.

The date wheel is the biggest tell. A 16200 should have the thinner, more condensed numerals of that era. Many replicas use a modern, chunkier date font that belongs on a six-digit Datejust, and once you notice it you cannot unsee it. The cyclops should magnify at roughly 2.5x, sit centered over the window, and have anti-reflective coating underneath. Cheap crystals give you a blurry, washed-out date at an angle.

Case, crystal, and crown

Measure it. A correct 16200 case lands near 11.5mm thick. Reps with a 2836 inside commonly measure 12.5mm or more, and while nobody on the street carries calipers, that extra millimeter changes how the watch sits under a cuff and how the lugs look in profile. The crown should be about 6mm, sit slightly proud of the case, and screw down with a smooth, positive stop.

Check the lug holes too. Drilled lugs appear on earlier production and spring bars push straight through. If the replica has drilled holes and you are chasing a later look, that is a mismatch.

Bracelet and end links

Period-correct bracelets are the Jubilee 62510H and the Oyster 78360, both 20mm at the lugs. The center links on these are hollow, which makes them light and slightly rattly. A lot of replicas ship with solid links because they are cheaper to make and feel more expensive. That is backwards for this reference. The fit at the lugs matters more than the link construction: gaps, wobble, or end links that sit proud of the case are the fastest way to spot a replica across a table.

How I would check one

  1. Caliper the case thickness and the lug width.
  2. Loupe the cyclops and read the date at an angle.
  3. Watch the date flip at midnight. It should snap, not crawl.
  4. Flex the bracelet at the lugs and look for daylight.
  5. Compare dial text against photos of a genuine 16200, not a 126200.

The legal part nobody mentions

Counterfeit watches are illegal to sell in the United States, and US Customs can seize imported shipments. Buying one for yourself is a different situation than passing it off as genuine, and reselling it as real is straightforward trademark fraud. Nothing here changes that.
