Short answer

A replica Rolex automatic watch is a copy of a Rolex model that runs on a self-winding mechanical movement. Rolex does not make it. The movement inside is a Chinese-made copy of a Rolex calibre or a third-party automatic. Sale of these watches is trademark infringement in the US and most of the EU.

What sits inside the case

Three movement families show up in most replicas.

  • Clone calibres. Copies of the Rolex 3135, 3235 and 4130. Made in Guangdong and Zhejiang. The top copies use a 1:1 gear layout so genuine parts fit.
  • Third-party automatics. Seagull ST21, Hangzhou 6300, Miyota 9015. Reliable, cheap, and not shaped like a Rolex calibre.
  • Decorated low-grade movements. A basic automatic with a stamped plate that imitates Rolex finishing.

Beat rate separates the tiers. A 28,800 vph (4 Hz) movement costs more than a 21,600 vph version. Eight ticks per second on the seconds hand points to 4 Hz.

Price tiers

Listings run from about $30 to $600.

  • $30 to $80: alloy case, mineral glass, 21,600 vph movement, plated finish that wears through.
  • $150 to $350: 316L steel case, sapphire glass, clone or Seagull movement, stamped clasp.
  • $400 to $600: 904L steel claim, 1:1 clone calibre, engraved rehaut, tighter bracelet fit.

No tier uses solid gold. Gold-tone models are plating over steel or brass.

Legal status in the US

Counterfeit watches fall under the Lanham Act. US Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments at the border and destroys them. Both the seller and the buyer carry risk. Reselling a replica as a Rolex is a crime in most jurisdictions. Selling it labeled as a replica is still trademark infringement. EU customs Regulation 608/2013 covers the same ground for imports into member states.

How to tell a copy from a genuine watch

Check the rehaut engraving under magnification. Genuine engraving is sharp and aligned to the minute markers. Check the lume pip on the bezel insert. Check the clasp code and the serial between the lugs. A watchmaker with a case opener can identify the movement in minutes. Genuine Rolex calibres carry specific finishing and a free-sprung balance. Copies do not match either.

What the price does not buy

Service support is the main gap. Independent watchmakers can source parts for Seagull and Miyota movements. Clone calibres have a shorter parts supply, and a failed part can retire the watch. Rolex service centers do not work on replicas at any price.
