What counterfeit sellers claim

Listings for a "replica 7300" use terms such as "1:1," "Swiss movement," and "super clone." These labels have no standard meaning. Sellers with these listings ship from China or Hong Kong in most cases. Photos in the listing often come from genuine watches or from other sellers.

  • "Same movement as the original." The genuine caliber 324 S C has Geneva stripes, a 21K gold rotor, and a Patek Philippe seal. Copies use generic movements.
  • "Real diamonds." Stones in counterfeit watches are cubic zirconia in most cases. No lab report comes with them.
  • "Passes authentication." Patek Philippe service centers open the caseback and check the movement, engraving, and serial number. Copies fail this check.

Legal status in the US

18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $2 million for an individual. 19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets US Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy counterfeit imports. CBP seizes thousands of counterfeit watches each year. Criminal charges against buyers are rare, but the shipment is gone and the money is gone. Reselling counterfeits is a federal crime.
