Short answer

The Master Compressor Extreme Lab is one of the harder Jaeger-LeCoultre models to find as a replica. Chinese factories copy Rolex, Omega, and Panerai in volume. JLC sells far fewer watches, so the tooling cost is hard to recover. A search for this model returns a small set of listings. Most carry a case that looks close and a movement that is a generic Chinese automatic. The genuine Extreme Lab 1 runs a tourbillon and a dry escapement. No replica maker has copied that escapement.

The genuine watch

Jaeger-LeCoultre is a Swiss maker based in Le Sentier in the Vallee de Joux. The company dates to 1833. Richemont owns it.

The Master Compressor Extreme Lab 1 appeared in 2007. It was a technology study inside the Master Compressor line. Calibre 988C. Automatic winding. Tourbillon. JLC built the escapement to run without lubricant. Case size sits in the 46 mm range. The Extreme Lab 2 followed in the 2010 to 2011 window and added a chronograph.

Why this model resists copying

  1. Tourbillon. Working Chinese tourbillon movements exist from Seagull, Hangzhou, and Dandong. They run. They are not calibre 988C. Bridge layout, jewel count, and beat rate differ.
  2. Escapement. The Extreme Lab escapement runs dry by design. A replica runs on oil and needs service.
  3. Case weight. Titanium has a density near 4.5 g/cm3. Steel sits near 7.8 g/cm3. A steel case sold as titanium reads heavy in the hand.
  4. Volume. Public sources do not agree on the production count for the Extreme Lab 1. The pool of genuine watches is small. Factories need volume to pay for tooling.

Replica price tiers

  • $80 to $150: quartz, mineral glass, plated case, printed dial text.
  • $250 to $600: 316L steel, sapphire, Chinese automatic, decorated rotor, no tourbillon.
  • $700 to $1,500: a real Chinese tourbillon, sapphire, steel or titanium case.

Checks to run on a listing

  • Crown at 3 o'clock with the Master Compressor compression lock.
  • Case diameter against the JLC spec sheet for the reference.
  • Weight in grams. Ask for a scale photo.
  • Tourbillon cage: one turn per minute. A 60 second time lapse shows the rate.
  • Movement photo with the caseback off.
  • Dial text weight and spacing, checked at 3x zoom.

Ask for a video with the seconds hand running. Photos hide a stopped movement.

Legal position in the United States

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell in the US. 18 U.S.C. Section 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries a statutory maximum of 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments. The personal exemption for mailed goods does not cover counterfeits. A single watch in a parcel can be seized and destroyed.
