What IW5448 refers to
IW5448 is an IWC reference number. It sits in the Portuguese family, the line with the round case, thin bezel, and railroad minute track. IWC stamps that number on the caseback of the genuine watch and lists it in its own archive. A seller offering a "replica IW5448" is offering a counterfeit: a watch made by a third-party factory with IWC markings applied to it. No replica comes from IWC. No replica carries an IWC warranty.
Exact specifications for the reference change with production year, dial color, and case metal. Case diameter in the Portuguese line runs 40 mm to 42 mm on most models. Check any spec sheet against IWC's own reference lookup or an authorized dealer.
How IW5448 replicas are built
Replica factories copy the outside of a watch and fit whatever movement matches the case. Portuguese copies use one of three movements:
- Asian 7750 copies, an automatic chronograph design with a wobble rotor and a coarse winding feel.
- Seagull ST19, a hand-wound column wheel chronograph used in manual Portuguese copies.
- ETA 2824 clones with engraved, gold-plated bridges made to look in-house.
Genuine Portuguese watches in this range run IWC in-house calibers, including the 51011 with a seven-day power reserve and the 89361 chronograph. In-house finishing includes Geneva stripes, circular graining, and blued screws. Copies print those patterns. They do not cut them.
Case metal on most replicas is 316L stainless steel. Some sellers claim 904L. Weight is the quick check: a solid gold Portuguese weighs far more than a gold-plated copy, and a plated case shows base metal at the lug edges after a few months of wear.
Checks that separate a copy from a real IW5448
- Caseback engraving. Genuine engraving is cut deep with crisp edges. Copies show shallow laser etching and font drift.
- Serial and reference lookup. IWC can confirm a serial number and a service record. A number that returns nothing is a warning sign.
- Subdial spacing. On chronograph copies the subdials sit at the wrong distance from center because the movement is a different size.
- Hand length and finish. Replica hands stop short of the minute track or show rough edges under a loupe.
- Crown and pusher engraving. The logo on a genuine crown is sharp and centered.
- Movement view. Rotor engraving, perlage, and jewel settings differ from the genuine caliber layout.
- Weight. A steel Portuguese Automatic runs about 90 to 110 grams on a leather strap. Copies run lighter.
Legal status in the United States
Counterfeit watches are illegal goods. Three rules cover the market:
- 18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual.
- 19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets U.S. Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy counterfeit imports. The personal-use exemption does not cover goods that infringe a trademark.
- Selling a replica as a genuine watch is fraud and is prosecuted as fraud.
Shipments from overseas sellers get stopped at ports. The buyer loses the money and the watch. The seller faces charges.
Price and resale
A new IWC Portuguese runs about $7,000 to $15,000 at retail. Gold models and complications run higher. Replica IW5448 listings run about $200 to $700, with "high-end" claims above $800. There is no collector resale market for a counterfeit. IWC will not service one, and independent watchmakers face parts shortages because the movement is a copy.
Claims to treat as unverified
- "1:1 clone" or "same factory as the genuine." No factory builds both.
- "Swiss movement." Most units in this price band carry Chinese movements, some with Swiss-made parts.
- "904L steel." Buyer tests often show 316L.
- "Waterproof to 300 m." Gaskets on copies fail pressure tests, and no warranty covers water damage.
Bottom line
IW5448 is a real IWC reference. A replica sold under that number is a counterfeit with a copied outer case and a third-party movement. Legal risk sits with the seller and the importer. Resale value is zero. No manufacturer service exists. A buyer who wants the real watch should budget for it. A buyer who wants the look should know what arrives in the box.
