Short answer

A replica Breguet vintage watch is a new watch built to look like a Breguet model from 1775 to 1950. Workshops in Guangzhou and Shenzhen make most of them. The case is steel or gold plate. The movement is a Chinese clone or a Seagull ST19 hand-wind caliber. Prices run from $150 to $600. A genuine vintage Breguet from the same era sells at auction for $10,000 to $500,000 and higher. A replica is a copy, not a restored watch.

Models that get copied

Three groups show up in listings. First, Souscription watches from 1790 to 1800 with one hand and a plain enamel dial. Second, Type XX chronographs from the 1950s with a 38 mm steel case and a flyback function. Third, Classique dress models with guilloche dials and Breguet hands. Makers copy the dial text and the caseback stamps. They do not copy the movement layout.

What is inside the case

Most replica Breguet vintage watches use one of four movements: the Seagull ST19, the Hangzhou 2189, the DG2813, or a Miyota 9015 clone. The ST19 is a hand-wind column wheel chronograph. It runs at 21,600 vph. Power reserve is about 40 hours. Cases are 316L steel with 3 to 5 micron gold plating. Sapphire crystals are common. Water resistance is listed at 30 m and not tested. A watchmaker in the US can service an ST19. Parts for the DG2813 cost little. No seller stocks parts for the case, dial, or hands.

US law and customs

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the US. 18 U.S.C. Section 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods and carries up to 10 years in prison for a first offense. CBP officers seize counterfeit watches at ports of entry. Breguet holds US trademarks on its name and logo. US law gives no personal-use exception for counterfeit trademark goods. A package can be seized and destroyed. The buyer gets no refund from customs and no refund from most sellers.

Checks before paying

  1. Caseback text. Genuine Breguet uses set font sizes and serial formats. Compare photos from auction catalogs.
  2. Dial print. Copies use thick paint and wrong accent marks on the signature.
  3. Hands. Breguet hands have a hollow pomme tip. Copies use solid metal.
  4. Movement photos. Ask for a photo of the actual movement, not a stock image.
  5. Payment method. A card chargeback is the only recourse. Bank transfer and crypto offer none.

Cost of ownership

A $300 replica with an ST19 needs a service at $150 to $250 within five years. Gold plating wears through at the lugs and crown. Case parts do not exist, so a dented case stays dented. A genuine vintage Breguet needs a factory archive certificate, which Breguet issues from Paris, and service at a Breguet service center. The two paths share no parts and no records.
