Quick answer
A replica Blancpain vintage watch is a counterfeit copy of a Blancpain model made between 1953 and the early 1980s. Most copies target the Fifty Fathoms dive watch. Prices run from about $80 to $600. US law bars import and sale, and Customs can seize the shipment.
What counts as vintage Blancpain
Blancpain used the Rayville S.A. name from the 1950s into the 1970s. Dials from that period carry "Rayville" or "Blancpain" alone. The firm stopped production in the 1970s and restarted in 1983 under Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet. The Swatch Group bought the brand in 1992. Replica sellers use "vintage" to mean the Rayville years.
Models copied most
- Fifty Fathoms, 1953. 41mm case. Rotating bezel with a triangular marker.
- Fifty Fathoms Milspec, 1957. No radiation symbol on the dial.
- Tornek-Rayville TR-900. Made for the US Navy. Production totals are small.
- Aqualung, 1960s. No crown guards on some references.
- Bathyscaphe, 1956. Smaller case.
Movements and parts
Most copies use a Chinese automatic: DG2813, Seagull ST2130, or Hangzhou 6300. A few sellers fit a Miyota 8215. Case material is 316L stainless steel in most listings. Crystal is mineral glass or sapphire. Lume is paint, not radium. Genuine 1950s dials used radium, which reads on a Geiger counter. Copies do not.
How to tell a copy from a real one
- Case back engravings on copies are shallow and uneven.
- Genuine Rayville crowns sit flush. Copies often sit proud.
- Font spacing on the dial differs. Letterforms are wider on copies.
- A real vintage movement shows patina on the bridges. A new Chinese movement does not.
- Serial numbers do not match published Rayville records.
US legal status
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Penalties for a first offense reach 10 years in prison and $2 million in fines for an individual. Import of counterfeit merchandise is barred by 19 U.S.C. 1526. US Customs and Border Protection destroys seized watches and can issue a civil penalty. Payment data and shipping records become part of the case file.
What is not known
Production totals for several Rayville references are not published. Sellers seldom name the factory. Movement claims are hard to check without opening the case.
