The "ref 4101" label on replica Audemars Piguet Royal Oak listings is not a single watch. It reads like an AP number, but it does not map cleanly onto one catalog reference, and sellers use it loosely. Most reps sold under it are 41mm Royal Oak three-handers with a decorated clone movement and a tapisserie dial. So the first job is to work out which watch the photos actually show, then judge the build. Get that order wrong and you spend your time comparing a thin Jumbo case against a standard 41mm one.

Start with the watch, not the number

I ignore the title and look at four things in the listing photos: case diameter, thickness, dial layout and date position. A 41mm Royal Oak three-hander with a date at 3 is a different animal from a thin two-hander with no date. Once you know which one you are looking at, the reference number stops mattering much. Ask the seller for the case diameter and thickness in millimeters before anything else. If they cannot answer, that tells you plenty.

Case and bezel

The Royal Oak was designed by Gerald Genta in 1972, and the case is still the hardest part to fake well. Look for the octagonal bezel with eight hexagonal screws, a sharp bevel running along the case flanks, and a caseback that sits flush.

  • Screws should be hex-cut with a clean slot, sitting flush. Stamped crosses or screws that stand proud are a cheap tell.
  • The bevel along the case edge should catch light in one continuous line. Soft, rounded edges mean the case was polished by hand after machining.
  • Brushed surfaces should run in one direction, with no swirl marks crossing the grain.
  • Thickness is where budget reps fail. Thin models should sit under about 10mm. Anything over 11mm on a time-only Royal Oak is a red flag.

The bracelet is the giveaway

Most people judge the dial. The bracelet is what gets noticed on a wrist. The integrated Royal Oak bracelet has flat links with polished chamfers on the outer edges, and it tapers toward the clasp. On a good rep, the links flex smoothly, the chamfers are even on both sides, and the clasp closes with a solid click. On a weak one, the chamfers are uneven, the links rattle, and the end links do not sit tight against the case. Ask for a video of the bracelet flexing and the clasp opening and closing. Photos hide sloppy finishing.

Dial and hands

The tapisserie pattern should be raised and consistent, with squares that line up across the dial. Cheap versions print the pattern flat, and you can see it at arm's length. Check the date window: the cutout should be crisp, the date wheel font should match the reference you are copying, and the number should sit centered. Hands should be flat, well finished, and the right length. A minute hand that stops short of the printed track is an easy spot.

Movement and weight

Most reps in this price range use a Miyota 9015 or an ETA 2824 clone with decorative plates and a rotor engraved to look like an AP caliber. The real AP 3120 has roughly 60 hours of power reserve and a finished movement you can look at through the caseback. A clone will not match that, and it does not need to. What matters is that it winds smoothly, hacks, and keeps reasonable time. Steel Royal Oaks on a full bracelet usually land around 150 to 165 grams. A rep that comes in under 140 grams feels light in the hand and on the wrist.

Price tiers, briefly

  1. Under $150: stamped dial, rattly bracelet, thick case. Skip it.
  2. $250 to $450: decent case shape, average bracelet, reliable clone movement. The value zone.
  3. $500 and up: better finishing, sharper bevels, sometimes a clone with a proper thin case. Worth it only if the seller shows real macro photos.

Before you pay

Ask for a timestamped photo of the actual watch, not catalog renders. Ask about the movement, the case thickness, and the weight. Confirm the return policy in writing and pay with a method that gives you recourse. Customs seizure is a real risk on any shipment from China, so factor that into what you are willing to spend.

Bottom line

The ref 4101 label is marketing. The watch in the photos is the product. Judge the case bevels, the bracelet chamfers, the dial texture and the thickness, and you will sort the good reps from the bad ones faster than any number on the listing will.
