A fake Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph is a counterfeit copy of reference 5500V, a 42.5 mm steel chronograph that Vacheron Constantin sells for about $30,000. Fakes sell for $300 to $900. They copy the case, dial and bracelet. They use a third-party chronograph movement. The tells are case thickness, movement finish, rotor material, date position and the strap release.
Specs of the real watch
- Reference 5500V/110A-B148. Stainless steel. 42.5 mm wide. About 13.7 mm thick.
- Caliber 5200. Self-winding column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch. 52-hour power reserve. 28,800 vph. Hallmark of Geneva.
- Two subdials: 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, small seconds at 9 o'clock. Date at 4:30.
- Sapphire caseback. 22K gold rotor cut in the shape of a compass rose.
- 150 m water resistance. Steel bracelet with a tool-free release. Rubber and alligator straps fit the same case.
Why copies look close in photos
Case shape, dial print and bracelet links are easy to scan and machine. The factories that build Rolex copies build Overseas copies with the same suppliers for cases, dials and hands. A phone photo at 30 cm hides the gaps. Calipers and a loupe do not.
Six checks
- Thickness. Measure the case with calipers. Genuine is about 13.7 mm. Most chronograph copies run 14.5 mm to 15 mm because the movement under the dial is thicker.
- Movement. Look through the caseback. Caliber 5200 shows Geneva stripes, angled bridges, black-polished screws and a solid gold rotor. Copies show stamped plates, gold-colored plating and a rotor with shallow engraving.
- Chronograph action. The 30-minute counter moves in one-minute steps and resets to zero. Some copies fit a 12-hour counter. Cheap ones fit a decorative subdial that never moves.
- Date. It sits at 4:30 in a small window. Copies place it slightly off center and use a different numeral font.
- Strap release. The bracelet and straps lock with a spring-loaded latch on the end link. Copies have a stiff latch, a different latch shape, or no latch at all.
- Weight and engraving. A steel Overseas Chronograph on the bracelet weighs about 180 g. Copies run 10 g to 20 g lighter. Caseback text on copies is shallow, and the Maltese cross is soft at the edges.
Price and law
Genuine 5500V watches trade near retail on the secondary market. Copies at $300 use a basic movement and plated parts. Copies at $800 to $900 use a clone case and a decorated rotor, but the movement is still not a Caliber 5200. Importing counterfeit goods into the United States is prohibited, and trafficking in them is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A counterfeit watch has no Vacheron Constantin warranty and no service path through the brand.
What a copy cannot match
The Hallmark of Geneva covers the movement finish and assembly, not the case. A copy can match the dial color and the case outline. It cannot match a hand-finished caliber, a gold rotor, or a service record from Vacheron Constantin. Ask for the warranty card, the service papers and a movement photo before any money moves.
