Short answer
A fake Speedmaster Date is a counterfeit of the Omega Speedmaster Date, a 39 mm automatic chronograph with subdials at 6, 9, and 12 and a date window at 3. Most fakes carry a generic chronograph movement, a printed date wheel, and a caseback with shallow engraving. The real watch has an Omega calibre 1152 or 3220, a signed crown, and a serial number that matches the Omega archive. Check the movement and the caseback first, because those two areas expose almost every copy.
Know the reference before you buy
The Speedmaster Date ran from the early 1990s into the 2010s under several references, including 3511.50, 3513.50, 3210.50, and 3211.50. Case size is 39 mm on most of them. The subdial layout stays at 6, 9, and 12, with the date at 3. Counterfeiters copy the overall look but mix details from other Speedmaster lines, so a Date model with a 42 mm case, a date at 4:30, or a Moonwatch style step dial is wrong before you look any closer.
Checks that expose a fake
- Ask for a sharp photo of the caseback with the reference and serial numbers readable.
- Compare the engraved reference against the model shown in the photos.
- Request a look at the movement through the caseback or from a watchmaker, then confirm the Omega mark and calibre number on the rotor and bridges.
- Inspect the date window at 3 o'clock, which on the real watch sits in a beveled cutout.
- Study the date wheel font, which on fakes is thin, wide, or off center in the window.
- Check the subdial hands at 6, 9, and 12, which on a genuine watch stop short of the track marks.
- Examine the crown, which on the real watch carries the Omega logo in relief.
- Weigh the watch, since a genuine steel Speedmaster Date on a bracelet sits near 130 grams.
- Run the chronograph, which should start, stop, and reset with a firm click and no lag on the sweep hand.
- Read the paperwork, since Omega supplies a numbered warranty card, a pictogram card, and a matching box.
Movement and caseback
Omega built the Speedmaster Date around the calibre 1152 and later the calibre 3220, both drawn from the ETA 7750 architecture. That matters because the 7750 family has a distinct beat rate and a wobble you can feel when the rotor turns. Fakes often use a basic Chinese chronograph with a different beat rate, a rotor that spins with no resistance, and a date that flips late. The caseback on a real watch is solid steel with deep engraving, the reference number, and the serial number. Fakes show soft, shallow lettering and serial numbers that fall outside any known production block.
Dial, hands, and crystal
Genuine Speedmaster Date dials have applied metal markers with crisp edges, white lume that has aged to a warm tone on older examples, and hands with a polished finish. Copies use printed markers, lume that glows green or sits uneven in the plot, and hands that look flat under a loupe. The crystal on the real watch is sapphire with almost no distortion at the edges. A fake crystal or mineral glass shows a blue or rainbow tint at an angle.
Price and paperwork
Speedmaster Date models trade in the low four figures on the used market, so an asking price far below the going rate is the first warning sign. A complete set includes the inner and outer box, the warranty card with a matching serial, the pictogram card, and the instruction booklet. Sellers who offer the watch alone with no papers, or with papers printed on the wrong stock, are a risk. Price alone proves nothing, but a low price combined with a weak caseback and a generic movement is enough to walk away.
If you already bought one
Stop wearing the watch and do not send it for repair through a dealer. Take it to an independent watchmaker and ask for a movement identification and a written assessment. If the seller took payment through a platform with buyer protection, open a dispute and attach the assessment and clear photos of the caseback and movement. For a private sale, report the transaction to the platform and to your local consumer protection office. Keep the listing screenshots, since they carry the claims the seller made about authenticity.
