Short answer

A "fake small seconds 1815" is a replica of the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Small Seconds, a hand-wound dress watch with a sub-dial at 6 o'clock. Replicas copy the dial layout. Few copy the movement. Check four things in this order: the movement through the caseback, the center axis of the small seconds hand, the measured case diameter, and the quality of the engraving on the balance cock.

The reference watch

The 1815 line started in 1994. The name marks the birth year of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, 1815. The current 1815 Small Seconds, ref. 297.026, uses a 38.5 mm case in white gold. Inside is the hand-wound calibre L051.1. Lange lists a 55-hour power reserve and 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour. Earlier versions of the same model came in a 35 mm case, so case size alone does not prove a watch is wrong. Match the size to the reference the seller names.

Where replicas fail

  • Movement finish. The genuine L051.1 has a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, screwed gold chatons, and a balance cock engraved by hand. Replica plates are brass with plating. The engraving is stamped or laser cut, so the cuts look shallow and repeat from watch to watch.
  • Sub-dial axis. On the genuine dial the small seconds hand sits on the vertical center line, aligned with the 6 o'clock index. Replicas show the hand a fraction off that line, or the printed track sits off center against the hand.
  • Running seconds. Ask for a 60-second video. A jumping or stuttering seconds hand points to a low-beat movement or an indirect drive off the main train. That is not how the L051.1 drives the sub-dial.
  • Caseback text. Laser marking on replicas is thin and sits above the surface. Genuine engraving cuts into the metal. Replica sellers also reuse the same serial number across units.

Checks to run before paying

  1. Request a sharp photo of the movement with the caseback removed, not through glass.
  2. Request a video of the seconds hand running for one full minute.
  3. Ask for the case measured with calipers, lug to lug and across the bezel.
  4. Ask which reference number the replica claims to copy, then compare diameter and dial print to that reference.
  5. Ask for the weight in grams. Solid gold cases and plated cases differ by a wide margin.

Price context

Genuine 1815 Small Seconds watches sell in the tens of thousands of dollars on the secondary market. Replica sellers quote from about $250 to $900 depending on the movement. No public dataset verifies those figures, and quoted prices change with the seller. A low price does not prove a fake movement, and a high price does not prove better finishing. Judge the parts, not the listing.

Limits of any guide

Photos and video do not prove origin. A seller can send images of a genuine watch and ship something else. Escrow, inspection on arrival, and a return window cover more risk than any checklist. Treat claims about factory names with caution: replica production moves between workshops and the labels do not stay fixed to one builder.
