Fake Rolex 16610: What You Are Looking At
A fake Rolex 16610 is a counterfeit of the Submariner Date that Rolex built from 1988 to 2010. The reference number is the part most buyers skip, and it is the part that decides whether a replica looks right. The 16610 uses a 40 mm case, an aluminum bezel insert, a sapphire crystal with a cyclops, and the caliber 3135 inside. Chinese factories have copied this exact reference for years, and the output ranges from a $40 quartz trinket to a $500 build with a cloned 3135 that sweeps at the right rate and sits at the right crown height. Most bad purchases happen somewhere between those two ends.
The Real 16610, in Short
- Steel case, 40 mm across, 20 mm lugs, about 12.5 mm thick
- Caliber 3135 automatic, 28,800 vph, quickset date, sweep second hand
- Sapphire crystal with a cyclops, and no anti reflective coating on the 16610
- Aluminum insert, 60 minute scale, lume pip at 12
- Triplock crown, rated to 300 m / 1000 ft
- Solid end link Oyster bracelet on later examples, drilled lugs on earlier ones
- Rehaut engraving on later production, from about 2002 forward
- 16610LV with the green insert, the "Kermit", arrived in 2003
That list is the yardstick. Any replica that misses one line on it will miss the others too, because the same factory decisions carry through the whole watch.
Why This Reference Is Hard to Copy
The 16610 is a thin, small watch by modern standards, and its case shape is the hardest thing to reproduce. The crown guards taper into the mid case with a specific curve. Cheap copies make them too fat, too pointed, or lopsided on one side. The lug profile matters as well, since the 16610 lugs turn down and thin out, while many replicas keep them thick and flat.
The dial is the second problem. Spacing on "OYSTER PERPETUAL" and the weight of "1000ft = 300m" are set by tooling that costs real money to match. The coronet gets squashed or stretched on low tier dials. The bezel insert font is another tell, and so is the pearl: genuine inserts sit the lume pip low in a metal surround, while copies often raise it into a dome.
The Tiers You Will See
Replicas of this reference fall into three rough groups, and the movement tells you which one you are holding.
- Bottom tier. Quartz or a 21 jewel automatic. The second hand ticks or stutters. Crown height sits wrong, the case is too thick, and the caseback usually carries the wrong reference stamp.
- Mid tier. An ETA clone such as the A2836 or A2824. The case improves, but the stem height sits low, so the crown guards get shaved to let the crown fit. The date also flips the opposite way from the genuine 3135.
- Top tier. A cloned 3135, sold as SH3135, SA3135, or VR3135. Correct crown position, correct 28,800 bph sweep, correct date direction. This is the group that gets called a super clone, and it runs $350 to $600 from a dealer before mods.
Common mods on a top tier 16610 are a genuine spec crystal, a date wheel overlay, a genuine insert, and a service on the clone movement. Those add cost fast, and at some point the total passes what a used genuine 14060M or a well kept 16610 with papers would start to approach.
Tells That Give a 16610 Replica Away
- Blue or purple anti reflective tint under the cyclops. The genuine 16610 has none.
- Rehaut engraving that drifts out of line with the minute markers, or is too shallow to catch light.
- Date numerals that are too thin, too wide, or float away from the edge of the window.
- Insert font that is too heavy or too light, and a pearl that sits proud of the insert.
- Crown guards that are not mirror images of each other.
- Lume that glows a different color on the pip than on the hands.
- End link gaps at the lugs, or a bracelet that rattles and flexes.
- Caseback stamps for a reference that does not exist, or none at all.
- A rotor that scrapes or a winding feel that is gritty instead of smooth.
The Part Nobody Mentions Before You Pay
Importing a counterfeit watch into the United States is prohibited, and Customs can seize and destroy it. Selling one as genuine is a federal crime, not a gray area. Rolex will not service a counterfeit, and an independent watchmaker may refuse it too, since parts for a cloned 3135 are not the same as parts for the real one. Water resistance claims from a dealer are marketing copy until someone pressure tests the case.
Resale is the other reality. A replica moves on member to member forums such as RWI and RepGeek for a fraction of what it cost new, and buyers there know the market better than you do. Buy a replica because you want the look on your wrist, not because you see it as a placeholder for an investment.
A Short Checklist Before You Pay
- Confirm the movement by name, not by a photo of a rotor.
- Ask for the crown height measurement and photos of both crown guards from the front.
- Check the cyclops for tint under daylight, not indoor light.
- Look at the rehaut engraving against the minute markers at 12, 3, 6, and 9.
- Ask what the date does when you turn the crown backward.
- Price the mods you want before you buy, then compare the total to a used genuine Submariner.
