A fake Rolex 116618 is a copy of the gold Submariner Date that Rolex sold from 2008 to 2020. The real watch has a solid 18k yellow gold case and bracelet, a 40 mm Oyster case, a Cerachrom bezel insert, and caliber 3135. Replicas use gold plating over 316L steel and a Chinese-made movement. The differences show up on a scale, under a loupe, and at customs.
Reference 116618 in plain numbers
- Case: 40 mm, 18k yellow gold, screw-down crown, solid caseback
- Bezel: unidirectional, black ceramic insert with gold-filled numerals
- Movement: caliber 3135, automatic, 28,800 vph, about 48 hours of power reserve
- Crystal: sapphire with a 2.5x cyclops and a laser-etched coronet at 6 o'clock
- Water resistance: 300 m / 1,000 ft
- Lug width: 20 mm
Rolex replaced the 116618 with the 126618 in 2020. The newer reference moved to caliber 3235 and a 41 mm case.
Gold against plating
18k yellow gold has a density near 15.5 g/cm³. 316L steel sits near 8.0 g/cm³. A case cut from solid gold carries close to twice the mass of the same case in steel. Replica sellers advertise plating of 3 to 5 microns over a steel body. That layer holds no meaningful gold weight, and it wears through at lug edges, crown guards, and clasp corners. The exposed steel reads as a pale grey line against the yellow.
Color is a second tell. Rolex casts and finishes its own gold alloy. Plated copies vary by batch, and many run too orange under daylight.
What the replica copies and what it does not
External geometry is close on the better Chinese versions. Case width, lug shape, and bezel scallops measure within a fraction of a millimeter on the best examples. Internals are another matter.
- Movement: most replicas run a Chinese clone of the 3135 or a 2824-type movement. Finishing is minimal and parts do not interchange with Swiss components.
- Water resistance: sellers list 300 m. Few replicas pass a pressure test at 100 m. Gaskets and caseback threads are the usual failure points.
- Rehaut engraving: depth and letter spacing differ. Genuine engraving is crisp and even around the full circumference.
- Date window: font weight and cyclops magnification shift between batches. Rolex uses 2.5x.
- Bracelet fit: solid end links on the genuine watch sit flush with no gap and no rattle.
- Caseback and lugs: the serial sits between the lugs at 6 o'clock. Stamping depth varies on copies.
Because the 116618 has a solid caseback, a movement check requires opening the watch. Buyers who never open it judge on the outside alone.
Price gap
Used 116618LN watches trade in the tens of thousands of dollars on the secondary market, and the gold content sets a floor under that price. Replica listings for plated gold versions sit in the hundreds of dollars. Versions sold as "gold wrapped" or "heavy" cost more and still contain steel cores.
Legal status in the United States
Federal law blocks import of goods carrying a counterfeit mark under 19 U.S.C. § 1526. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy shipments, and parcels from China are screened. Trafficking carries separate exposure under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, with a first-offense maximum of 10 years and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual.
Customs seizure letters go to the buyer's address. The watch is not returned, and the payment is not refunded by the seller.
Service and resale
Rolex service centers do not accept counterfeit watches. Independent watchmakers often decline for the same reason, and when they agree, replacement parts come from the replica supply chain. Resale value is close to zero outside the replica market.
Checklist before paying for a 116618
- Weigh the watch. Solid gold and plated steel do not match on a scale.
- Look at the lug edges and clasp corners for grey wear lines.
- Inspect the rehaut engraving at 12 and 6 with a loupe.
- Confirm the laser coronet in the crystal at 6 o'clock under direct light.
- Ask for a pressure test result from a watchmaker, not a seller claim.
- Match the serial between the lugs against the paperwork.
None of these steps proves a watch genuine. They do catch the common replica tells, and a documented service history from an authorized center settles the rest.
