Fake pilot watches with automatic movements sell for $60 to $400. The dials copy IWC, Laco, Stowa, Zenith, and Bell & Ross patterns: large numerals, a triangle at 12, and an oversized crown. Movements come from three sources: Miyota in Japan, Seagull in China, and ETA clones from Chinese factories. In the US, importing or selling a watch that carries a counterfeit trademark is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320.

What "automatic" means on a listing

An automatic movement winds itself from the motion of the wearer's wrist. A rotor on the back of the movement spins, and a gear train sends that motion to the mainspring. The watch stops after 38 to 42 hours off the wrist. A listing that shows a quartz battery inside the case is mislabeled. "Self-winding" means the same thing as automatic.

Movements found in fake pilot watches

  • Miyota 8215. 21,600 vibrations per hour, 40-hour reserve, 21 jewels. Made by Citizen in Japan. Common in $80 to $150 builds.
  • Seagull ST2130. 28,800 vph, 40-hour reserve. A copy of the ETA 2824-2 layout. Common in $150 to $300 builds.
  • ETA 2824-2 clone. 28,800 vph, 38-hour reserve. Rotor engraving varies. Origin is Chinese in most cases.
  • Seagull ST19. Hand-wound chronograph, 21,600 vph, column wheel. Used in pilot chronograph copies.

Case and dial specs to check

  • Case width. Pilot copies run 39 mm to 46 mm. The Laco Augsburg is 39 mm. The Bell & Ross BR 03 is 42 mm.
  • Lug width. 20 mm and 22 mm are the common sizes. Straps at those sizes are easy to replace.
  • Crystal. Mineral glass sits at Mohs 5 to 6. Sapphire sits at Mohs 9. Sellers label both as "sapphire coated."
  • Water resistance. A mark of 30 m to 50 m covers rain and hand washing. A screw-down crown and caseback gasket are the parts that matter.
  • Lume. C3 and BGW9 pigments glow green and blue. Cheap copies use paint that fades in 20 minutes.

Price tiers

Under $100 buys a mineral crystal, a Miyota 8215 or a cheaper clone, and a stamped caseback. $100 to $250 adds sapphire, solid end links, and a Seagull ST2130. $250 to $400 buys a closer case profile, better lume, and a regulated movement. Stock sits on marketplaces such as DHgate, AliExpress, and Taobao. Shipping from China to a US address takes 10 to 30 days.

US legal status

18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. 19 U.S.C. § 1526 lets Customs and Border Protection seize and destroy shipments. Watches rank among the top seized categories in CBP reports. A copy of a protected trade dress can also draw a civil suit under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1114. One watch for personal use carries lower risk than resale. Resale carries the highest risk.

How to read a listing before you pay

  • Ask for a photo of the movement with the caseback removed.
  • Check the beat rate. 28,800 vph shows 8 ticks per second.
  • Ask for the lug width in millimeters, not the strap size.
  • Check whether the listing names a movement model or says "high grade automatic."
  • Compare the price against the movement cost. A Miyota 8215 alone runs $25 to $40 at retail.

What a listing cannot tell you

Magnets, shock, and water damage show up after delivery. A pilot watch with a soft iron cage resists magnetic fields. Few copies include one. Service on a Chinese automatic costs $40 to $90 at an independent shop. US parts houses do not stock replacement parts for ETA clones. Rolex, IWC, and Laco will not service a counterfeit.
