Short answer

A fake Patek Philippe 5205 is a counterfeit of an annual calendar watch that Patek Philippe released in 2010. Genuine references include the 5205G in white gold and the 5205R in rose gold, plus later dial variants such as the 5205G-010 and the 5205R-010. The watch uses caliber 324 S QA LU 24H/303. Counterfeit versions sell for about $300 to $900. None of them carry a real annual calendar module. A real 5205 needs one date correction per year, at the end of February.

What the real 5205 does

  • Case size is 40 mm. Thickness is about 11.4 mm.
  • Three apertures sit in an arc at the top of the dial: day at the left, date in the center, month at the right.
  • A subdial at 6 o'clock holds a moon phase and a 24-hour hand.
  • There is no central seconds hand. No small seconds hand either.
  • Water resistance is 30 m. Sapphire crystal front and back. Alligator strap.
  • The movement has 34 jewels, a 21K gold rotor, and about 45 hours of power reserve at 21,600 vibrations per hour.

Tells on a counterfeit

  1. A running seconds hand. The genuine 5205 has none. Any listing with a sweeping seconds hand shows a different movement.
  2. Calendar windows that never move. Some fakes print the day, date, and month on a fixed plate.
  3. Moon phase disc that turns once per day. The real disc turns once per 29.5 days.
  4. 24-hour subdial that finishes a full cycle in 12 hours.
  5. Case thickness above 12 mm. The extra space holds a spacer ring around a smaller movement.
  6. Date change that creeps forward across 30 to 60 minutes. The genuine calendar jumps at midnight.
  7. Shallow caseback engraving. Reference number, movement number, and metal hallmarks sit in the wrong place or use the wrong font.
  8. Plated case. A solid white gold or rose gold case weighs more than a plated steel or brass case of the same size.

Movement differences

Most replica 5205 watches use a Miyota 9015, a Seagull ST21, or a similar base. Sellers add a decorative plate with Geneva stripes and a fake rotor engraving. The plate covers a movement that has no annual calendar program wheel. The finishing under a loupe shows machine lines on the bridges and no beveled edges on the steel parts. The real caliber carries the Patek Philippe Seal and hand-finished chamfers. The 5205 has a sapphire caseback, so the movement is visible. Photos in a listing often show the genuine watch instead of the item for sale. Ask for a photo of the actual movement with the caseback open.

Price and legal risk

Genuine 5205 watches sell at retail near $50,000, and second-hand prices track that level. A replica at $400 cannot contain a gold case, a gold rotor, or an annual calendar mechanism. In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at the border, and the buyer can lose the item and the money paid. Repair shops will not service a counterfeit, and Patek Philippe will not authenticate or repair one.

Checks before you trust a listing

  • Count the hands. Two hands plus a moon phase and 24-hour subdial. No seconds.
  • Ask for a video of the calendar changing at midnight.
  • Ask for the caseback photo and the movement number.
  • Weigh the watch. Ask for a scale photo.
  • Compare the clasp engraving and the strap stitching to factory photos.
