Short answer
A fake Lange automatic is a counterfeit A. Lange & Söhne watch with an automatic movement inside. Two types show up. The first copies a real automatic Lange model: Langematik, Saxonia Automatic, or Odysseus. The second uses a Lange dial and a generic case, with a low-cost automatic caliber hidden under a display back. Genuine Lange output is about 5,000 watches a year. Most of those are hand-wound.
Which Lange models are automatic
The Glashütte maker has built a small number of automatic calibers since the 1994 relaunch.
- L921, named Sax-O-Mat, entered production in 1997. It carries the Zero-Reset mechanism: the seconds hand jumps to zero when the crown is pulled.
- L922 adds a big date. It powers the Langematik Perpetual.
- L086 sits in the Saxonia Automatic and the Saxonia Moon Phase.
- L155.1 Datomatic sits in the Odysseus, a 40.5 mm stainless steel sports watch launched in 2019.
Core lines are hand-wound: Lange 1, Datograph, Zeitwerk, Richard Lange, 1815. A listing that calls a Lange 1 an automatic describes a watch that does not exist in the catalog.
Case metals
Lange cases come in yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, platinum, and honey gold. The Odysseus is the first series steel Lange. A steel case on a Lange 1 or Saxonia dial points to a counterfeit.
What sits inside a replica
Replica makers buy automatic calibers in bulk from China and Japan. Common bases include the Seagull ST18 and ST21, the Miyota 9015, and ETA 2824 clones. Wholesale prices run from $20 to $60 per movement. Rotors are brass with plating. Bridges are stamped, not cut. Low-cost movements can include plastic parts.
Checks that hold up
- Look at the balance cock. Lange hand-engraves each one with a floral pattern. A stamped or laser-cut copy shows flat lines and no depth.
- Pull the crown on a Langematik. Zero-Reset drops the seconds hand to zero. Fakes keep running.
- Read the caliber number on the bridge, such as L086.1, and compare it with the model.
- Weigh the watch. Gold and platinum run heavier than plated brass at the same case size.
- Check the rotor. A genuine Lange automatic rotor carries maker marks and a hand-finished surface. Replica rotors show thin plating and fake stamps.
Price gap
Saxonia Automatic retail sits in the mid $20,000s. The Odysseus listed near $28,800 at launch. A Langematik Perpetual trades above $100,000. Fakes sell from $100 to $900. The two objects differ in movement, metal, and finishing.
Market context
Counterfeit listings cluster around Rolex, Omega, and Patek Philippe, brands with high volume. Lange fakes are fewer. Annual production near 5,000 watches keeps the brand rare on the secondary market and in repair records, so serial checks against a reference photo do more work than they do for a Rolex.
What photos cannot settle
Weight, rotor noise, winding feel, and crown action need the watch in hand. A. Lange & Söhne does not service counterfeits. An authorized service center can check a serial number and confirm whether the case and movement belong together.
