Check the reference number first
IWC reference numbers start with IW and carry six digits. "IW545116" shows up in replica listings that copy text from an IWC product page. Before paying, compare three items in the listing: the model name, the case size in millimeters, and the movement type. When those three do not match the same real IWC watch, the listing is a template. Sellers reuse one block of text across several reference numbers.

Price bands
Replica prices for IWC-style watches fall into three rough bands. Under about $120 you find quartz movements, mineral glass, and plated cases. Between $150 and $400 you find automatic movements, sapphire glass, and 316L steel. Above $500 sellers claim Swiss movements and cloned parts. No public price list exists for these goods, so treat any quote as an estimate from the seller rather than a market fact.
Payment and import risk
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. Under 19 U.S.C. Section 1305 and 15 U.S.C. Section 1124, U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy a shipment. Buyers who pay by wire, gift card, or crypto have no chargeback path. If customs holds the parcel, the seller keeps the money in most cases. Ask what the seller does if the parcel is seized. A seller who promises a full refund on seizure is making a claim you cannot verify.
QC photo checklist
- Caseback engraving, straight on, in daylight
- Crown and pushers at 90 degrees to the case
- Dial print at 3x zoom
- Movement with the caseback removed
- Lume shot taken in a dark room
- Timestamped photo on a scale showing grams
Questions for the seller
- What movement is inside, and can you photograph the rotor?
- What is the measured case diameter, not the catalog figure?
- Do you ship with tracking, and who pays on seizure?
- Are the photos of the actual watch or a stock unit?
Red flags
- Photos with watermarks from two different sellers
- Price under $60 for a claimed automatic chronograph
- No caseback photo
- Payment by crypto or gift card only
- Chat moved off the storefront to a messaging app within minutes
What you cannot verify
No buyer can confirm steel grade, sapphire hardness, or movement origin from photos. Water resistance claims on replicas come with no test report. If a seller states 100 meters, treat the number as marketing copy. A watchmaker with a pressure tester can check the gaskets, and that test costs money. Service on a replica movement is also a problem: many watchmakers decline the work, and spare parts for clone calibers are not stocked.
