Short answer

A fake Fifty Fathoms rose gold is a stainless steel watch with a rose gold color coating, shaped to match Blancpain's 45 mm dive watch. The case, dial and bezel copy the outline. The metal does not. Genuine watches use 18K rose gold, an in-house movement with a 120-hour reserve and a sapphire bezel. Replicas use 316L steel, 2 to 10 microns of plating and a third-party movement with a 40-hour reserve. Prices run from $80 to $900. Water resistance is untested on every tier.

What the genuine watch is

Blancpain released the Fifty Fathoms in 1953 for French navy combat divers. The modern Automatique line uses a 45 mm case and caliber 1315. That movement has three barrels, 227 parts and a 120-hour power reserve. Water resistance is rated at 300 m. Rose gold versions use 18K gold with a 750 hallmark. Rose gold references list in the $30,000 range, more on a bracelet. Reference numbers change by year and market, so check the caseback against Blancpain's catalog before you trust a listing.

What the replica is made of

Most fakes start as a 316L stainless case cut to 45 mm. A plating shop adds rose gold color: 2 to 5 microns on low tiers, up to 10 microns on the top tier. Plated rose gold is a color, not an alloy. 18K rose gold has a density near 15 g/cm3. Steel sits at 7.9 g/cm3. The weight gap is the first thing a seller hides with a thick strap.

Price tiers

  • $80 to $150: 2813 movement, stamped dial, painted bezel markings, plating life of 3 to 6 months.
  • $250 to $450: 8215 or 4813 movement, applied markers, sapphire crystal, better case finish.
  • $500 to $900: Miyota 9015 or an ETA 2824 clone, sapphire bezel insert, closer dial print, 10 micron plating.

Where fakes fail

  • Plating rubs off at the crown, lugs and caseback lip. Bare steel shows in 6 to 12 months of daily wear.
  • Bezel action: a genuine bezel clicks at each of 60 positions. Fakes feel soft, and some sit half a mark off center.
  • Caseback engraving is shallow. Serial fonts differ from the catalog.
  • Lume on the pip and markers fades fast. Genuine dials use hand-applied Super-LumiNova.
  • Movement finish has no anglage and no black polish. Rotor text is laser printed, not engraved.
  • Power reserve is 40 hours, not 120.

How to check one

Weigh the head. A 45 mm rose gold case lands near double the weight of the same case in steel. A magnet will not pull on 18K gold. It can pull on 316L, so a weak pull is a warning sign, not proof. An XRF gun reads plating thickness and base metal in seconds, and most jewelers own one. Look for a 750 stamp and a caseback hallmark. Look at the caseback edge, where plating wears first.

Water and service

No replica ships with a tested gasket set. Plating builds on the crown tube and the caseback thread, and a 300 m pressure test is out of reach. Assume splash resistance at best. Service shops in the US refuse counterfeit watches on sight, so a dead movement means a new movement, not a repair.

Legal status in the US

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell. 18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods, with penalties up to 10 years for a first offense. CBP inspects parcels and seizes shipments. The buyer loses the money and the watch. Sellers face civil suits from the trademark holder on top of criminal exposure.
