Answer first
A fake Blancpain shows up in four places: the caseback engraving, the movement finish, the dial printing, and the paperwork chain. Verify the reference and serial against Blancpain's archives, put a loupe on the dial and caseback, open the watch with a watchmaker, and match every number on the papers to the numbers on the metal. If any one of those checks fails, stop. Do not negotiate around a failed check.
Finding the Perfect Pre-Owned Blancpain Watch Copy
Prerequisites
- A 10x jeweler's loupe
- Digital calipers
- A camera with a macro mode and raking light
- Access to a watchmaker willing to open the case
- The seller's full listing text and photo set saved offline
Inspection routine
- Ask the seller for the full reference number, case number, and movement number in writing before you view the watch. A legitimate seller has these on the papers.
- Photograph the caseback under raking light. Genuine Blancpain engraving is cut deep with crisp walls. Laser-etched fakes look shallow and slightly frosted.
- Measure the case diameter and thickness with calipers and compare to the published figures for that reference. Fakes often run 0.5 mm thick.
- Examine the dial printing with the loupe. Check that the logo sits level, that the text weight matches across the dial, and that the date window edges are cut, not printed.
- Check hand finishing. Genuine hands have beveled edges and flat, even lume fill. Fakes show rounded edges and uneven fill.
- Have a watchmaker remove the caseback. Look at the bridges, the anglage, and the engraving on the rotor. A stock movement with no maison markings ends the inspection.
- Match the movement number to the case number and to the papers. All three must agree.
- Verify the reference against Blancpain's own records or an authorized dealer before money changes hands.
Red flags
- Seller will not send a caseback photo
- Price sits well below the going rate for that reference in that condition
- Serial numbers absent, painted on, or shallow
- Papers list a reference that does not match the watch
- Pressure to wire funds or to close before an inspection
Paperwork and provenance
Ask for the original warranty card, the service receipts, and the name of the dealer who sold it first. Call that dealer. A pre-owned Blancpain with no service history and no verifiable first owner is a watch you cannot price, and a fake is a watch you cannot return once the wire clears.
