Short answer

Fake Blancpain Air Command watches exist, but supply is small. Replica factories put most of their output into Rolex, Omega, and Panerai. The Air Command copies that do appear are based on the modern 42.5 mm chronograph, not the 1950s original. The main tells are movement type, case thickness, subdial spacing, and the engraved limited-edition number.

What the real watch is

Blancpain built the original Air Command around 1957 to 1959. Reports describe a chronograph made for the United States Air Force, though paperwork from that period is thin. Documented surviving examples number about 12. Auction houses show a handful of them across decades.

The modern version arrived in 2019. Blancpain made 500 pieces in steel, with a 42.5 mm case and caliber F388B, an automatic flyback chronograph. Later runs used titanium and precious metals. Blancpain lists those references on its own site.

Which version gets copied

  • The 2019 steel limited edition of 500 pieces. The design is easy to photograph and the original is scarce.
  • Titanium and gold variants. Fewer copies, same tells.
  • Vintage-style pieces. Treat these as a separate problem. With about 12 known originals, a vintage Air Command at a normal price is not original.

Tells on a fake Air Command

  1. Movement. The modern Air Command uses an automatic caliber. A hand-wound movement behind a display back is a mismatch. Chinese chronograph movements such as the Seagull ST19 show up in many copies.
  2. Thickness. Measure the case at the crown. Copies add 1 mm to 2 mm because the replacement movement sits deeper in the case.
  3. Limited number. Real pieces carry an individual number between 1 and 500. Copies stamp the same number on every watch, or leave the plate blank.
  4. Subdials and date. Compare subdial positions and the date window against official photos. A different base movement forces different spacing.
  5. Engraving and fonts. Inspect caseback text, rotor engraving, and dial print under 10x magnification.
  6. Crystal and bezel. Check the anti-reflective coating, the bezel action, and the bezel grip.

Vintage Air Command and frankens

A franken watch uses a period chronograph case with added dial printing. Valjoux-based chronographs from the 1950s are the common base. An honest seller supplies photos of the movement, the caseback, and the inside of the caseback. If those photos do not exist, stop.

Price check

Copies sell from about $200 to $600 from China-based sellers. A modern Air Command trades in the five figures on the secondary market. A documented vintage example sells for more.

Before you buy

  • Ask for a photo of the movement and the caseback number.
  • Ask for a measurement at the crown.
  • Compare seller photos against Blancpain's own product images.
  • Blancpain does not publish an online serial database. Authentication means sending the watch to a service center. Confirm that step with the brand before you depend on it.
  • Pay with a method that has recourse.
