What forged carbon actually is
Forged carbon is a composite. Short carbon fibers get mixed with resin, pressed into a mold under heat and pressure, then machined and finished. The result is lightweight, strong, and visually random. No two parts match because the fiber orientation changes with every pour.

Check the pattern, not the color

Genuine molded carbon has no repeats and no stretch. Real grain also changes with the light angle as you tilt the watch. A film stays flat no matter how you turn it.
Run a thumb along the case flank. Real forged carbon feels smooth and slightly warm, with a faint tooth to the finish. Film over resin feels slick, and on lower tier fakes you can catch a raised edge where the wrap ends near the caseback.
Weight and balance
A 44mm Royal Oak Offshore in forged carbon is light. It sits well under the heft of a steel Offshore and lands in the same neighborhood as a full titanium piece. Fakes split two ways. Some use a steel case with a carbon skin, so the watch feels wrong in the hand, top heavy with a dead thud when you tap it. Others go the other direction and feel hollow and tinny because the case walls are thin and the movement is a stripped chrono module.
Balance on the wrist matters too. A genuine Offshore has mass in the caseback and a solid bracelet or rubber strap with a firm tang. Fakes usually show a flimsy buckle, a strap that kinks at the lugs, and spring bars that sit loose in oversized holes.
Dial, hands, and logo
The Mega Tapisserie grid is where mid tier fakes give up. On a real dial the pyramids have flat tops and crisp bevels, and the grid stays sharp out to the rehaut. Fakes show rounded nubs, a pattern that softens toward the center, or a stamped look with shallow relief. Subdial rings should have fine concentric snailing that catches light in rings. Fake subdials are often flat or brushed the wrong way.
Check the applied metal logo. Letters should be crisp, evenly spaced and properly polished on the bevels. Fake logos run thick, sit high off the dial, or show glue at the feet. Hands should be skeletonized with chamfered edges and even lume fill. Blobby lume or a seconds hand that sits too high above the dial is a tell.
Caseback and movement tells
Engravings on the caseback are a quick filter. Genuine markings cut deep with sharp shoulders and a consistent sandblasted or polished contrast. Fakes laser etch shallow text with fuzzy edges and wrong font weight, and the reference and serial numbers often make no sense against the model.
If there is a display back, look at the rotor and finishing. Real AP chrono calibers carry a heavy gold rotor with sharp engraving and clean Geneva stripes or circular graining. Fakes run decorated Asian chrono movements with printed or acid etched plates. Then start the chrono. A genuine column wheel or cam actuation resets with a crisp snap and the pushers feel firm through the full travel. Fakes feel mushy, and the reset often stutters or fails to snap back to zero.
Where the fakes usually land
- Entry tier: steel case, wrapped film, quartz or basic automatic, no chrono function that works properly.
- Mid tier: real chopped carbon overlay but the wrong mold shape, glossy resin, wrong caseback depth, plus an Asian 7750 based chrono.
- Upper tier: actual molded forged carbon that looks close in photos, but the grain density is off, mold seams show at the lugs, the dial texture is soft, and the movement is still wrong.
Two practical warnings
Forged carbon replicas are hard to service. Resin yellows, delaminates at the lugs and can crack if a watchmaker opens the case with the wrong tools. Nobody wants to warranty that.
In the US, buying or selling counterfeit watches is illegal, and customs seizes shipments. A forged carbon Offshore is also one of the most counterfeited references out there, so a low price on a rare limited piece is the loudest tell of all.
