Short answer
Fake Audemars Piguet ceramic watches are counterfeit copies of AP references that use black or white ceramic cases, bezels, or bracelets. The most copied models are the Royal Oak Offshore line and the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar in black ceramic. Counterfeit versions list for about $200 to $1,500. Genuine ceramic Royal Oak references sell for $40,000 and up. The copies are illegal to import or sell in the United States.
Ceramic in real Audemars Piguet watches
AP uses zirconium oxide ceramic for bezels, cases, and some bracelets. The material is sintered at high temperature, then ground and polished with diamond tools. AP brought ceramic case production in house at Le Brassus. Vickers hardness lands near 1,200 to 1,400, against about 200 for stainless steel. The material resists scratches and holds its color. It is also brittle: a hard knock can chip an edge, and a chip cannot be polished out.
What counterfeit versions use
- Steel or aluminum with a black PVD or DLC coating. Wear at the crown guards exposes the base metal.
- Low grade ceramic blanks that chip at the bezel edge and show a dull surface.
- Resin or composite material molded to look like ceramic. It scratches with a fingernail.
- Real ceramic bezels from third party suppliers, fitted to a steel case.
Signals a ceramic AP is not genuine
- Price. Ceramic Royal Oak references trade above $40,000 on the secondary market. A $400 listing is a counterfeit.
- Movement. Genuine watches use AP calibers 2121, 3120, or 4302. Counterfeits use generic automatic calibers with added decorative plates.
- Caseback. Genuine engraving is crisp and deep. Counterfeit text is shallow, and reference numbers often do not match the model.
- Weight. Ceramic is lighter than steel, but counterfeit cases feel heavy because the base metal is thick.
- Finish. Ceramic edges on a genuine AP are sharp and mirror polished. Coated steel shows soft edges and wear spots.
- Papers. AP does not run a public serial lookup. Authentication happens at an AP boutique or service center.
Legal status in the United States
Under 19 U.S.C. 1526, importing goods that carry a counterfeit trademark is prohibited. The personal use exemption that covers some gray market goods does not cover counterfeits, so CBP can seize a shipment and destroy it. Under 18 U.S.C. 2320, trafficking in counterfeit goods carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for a first offense by an individual. Civil claims fall under 15 U.S.C. 1117, which allows statutory damages up to $2,000,000 for each counterfeit mark and each type of goods when the use is willful.
Service and resale
Audemars Piguet service centers do not accept counterfeit watches. Parts are not sold to third parties, so a broken counterfeit ceramic case cannot be replaced with an AP part. Resale value sits near zero. Major marketplaces remove counterfeit listings, and some platforms close the accounts that post them.
