What a 41mm copy listing means
Rolex builds more than one 41mm case. The Datejust 41, the Submariner 41, the Oyster Perpetual 41, and the Datejust II all carry that number. Sellers use "copy" for a replica. A search for a 41mm copy points to one of these four models, most often a Datejust 41 with a fluted bezel or a Submariner 41. Get the reference number first. A Datejust 41 is 126334. A Submariner 41 is 124060 or 126610. A number removes doubt about what ships.
Advice before you pay
- Ask the seller for the reference number in writing.
- Ask for case photos with a caliper or ruler beside the watch. A Submariner 41 measures 41mm across and about 12.4mm thick. A Datejust 41 measures 41mm and about 11.7mm thick.
- Ask for a movement photo with the caseback off. Look at the balance wheel, not the rotor decoration.
- Use a payment method with a dispute process. Card and PayPal give recourse. Bank transfer and crypto do not.
- Set a price band and stay inside it. Low tier runs $60 to $120. Mid tier runs $200 to $400. High tier runs $450 to $750.
Parameters to check
- Case steel. Rolex uses 904L, sold as Oystersteel. Most copies use 316L. 904L holds a lighter tone and resists corrosion better. Both polish to a similar shine.
- Movement. Common clones are the Shanghai 3235, VR3235, VS3235, and DD3285. The VS3235 and DD3285 run at a higher beat rate and keep time better. A 2813 or ETA 2824 base sits at the bottom.
- Crystal. Sapphire with an anti-reflective coat on the cyclops. Mineral glass picks up scratches in weeks.
- Bezel. Ceramic insert on a Submariner. Fluted or smooth steel on a Datejust. Check the triangle and the flutes line up at 12 o'clock.
- Bracelet. Oyster, Jubilee, or President. Solid end links fit the case with no gap. Hollow links rattle.
- Water resistance. Claims run from 30m to 100m. Pressure test the watch at a local shop before you swim. Most sellers do not test.
- Rehaut and serial. Engraving depth varies. Rehaut alignment at 12 o'clock is a frequent flaw.
Pitfalls
- Stolen photos. Run a reverse image search on the first listing photo.
- QC photos that do not match the shipped unit. Ask for a photo with a handwritten date.
- A listed 41mm case that ships at 40mm or 42mm. Measure on arrival.
- Customs. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit goods. A seizure letter arrives with the parcel destroyed and the money gone.
- No resale and no service. Independent watchmakers refuse replicas. Parts do not swap with genuine Rolex parts.
Legal status
Importing a counterfeit watch into the United States is illegal. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 19 U.S.C. 2320. CBP can seize and destroy a parcel. Repeat shipments can trigger civil penalties. Personal use carries lower risk than resale, but the watch stays subject to forfeiture. France and Italy add criminal fines for buyers.
